Troubleshooting
Why a Global SharePlay room holds, what to check when the video is wrong, and what to include when you email support.
Most “it paused” moments in Global SharePlay are the room waiting for every browser to land on the same frame. This page lists those holds, the checks when you are on the wrong video or out of the room, and what to include if you still need to email us.
For how a room is supposed to behave, read Getting started and Rooms and hosts.
The room holds on purpose
When someone is still loading the video the room is on, playback holds. The same hold is used during a YouTube ad, a large seek, and a video change. The point is that a person joining late is not dumped into the middle of a scene, and a seek or a new video does not leave half the room behind.
Wait for the hold to clear before treating it as a failure. If you pause and play repeatedly during a hold, you are fighting the wait. Let the joiner’s page finish loading, or let the ad finish, and the shared timeline should move again.
YouTube’s own player can also stop for reasons that are not the extension: a sign-in prompt, an age restriction, a video the channel made private, or a region block. Global SharePlay cannot play a video YouTube will not play in that browser. Open the same URL without the room and confirm YouTube itself will start it.
You are on the wrong video
Invite links store the video from the moment they were copied. If the room changed videos afterward, an older link still points at the earlier one. Ask the host to copy a new link, or join with the room ID and let the live room state move you to the current video ID.
Also confirm every person typed the same room ID. Two rooms can exist at once. Similar nicknames do not merge them. The host sees the members of their room; if you are missing from that list, you are in a different room or you have not finished joining.
You cannot join, or the room vanished
A room holds up to 10 people. If it is full, someone has to leave. If the host is approving joins, you stay pending until they accept or deny you. That looks like a wait, not like a broken extension.
If the host leaves, host status passes to the remaining member who joined earliest. The room continues under that person. It does not close only because the original host disconnected.
After about 15 minutes without activity, everyone is removed and the live state is discarded. An old room ID and an old invite will not reopen that session. Create a new room. Nothing about the previous watch was saved as a club you can resume.
Playback drifts or the popup looks empty
Each person plays YouTube locally. Sync is the extension comparing position and video ID through the server, then catching the other tabs up. A short drift can appear while a hold is active or while a tab was in the background. Bringing the YouTube tab forward and waiting out the hold is the first check.
The popup keeps your nickname, last room ID, and server preference in the browser. If the popup is blank after a reinstall, those local values were cleared with the extension. Pick a nickname again and join with the room ID a friend still has. The server does not have an account you can recover by email.
Chrome notifications are how the extension tells you about join problems and sync status. If you blocked notifications, you can still be in the room; you just will not get those alerts. Check Chrome’s site and extension notification settings if you expected an alert and saw none.
What to send support
Email support@globalshareplay.com if the checks above do not explain it. We read every message. There is no phone line.
Include:
- What you were trying to do: create a room, join, open an invite, or fix playback.
- Whether the note is about this website, the extension, or the join page.
- Your browser, and the extension version if you have it.
- The room ID if you are comfortable sharing it, and whether you were the host.
- What the YouTube page was doing at the same time (ad, “video unavailable,” sign-in wall, or a normal watch page).
Do not send passwords or payment cards. A nickname and a room ID are enough for us to understand the report, and they are not credentials. Privacy requests use the same address; the Privacy Policy says what we actually store.
